Haute Hotels

South Beach exterior The Colony

Hotels are my passion — and my profession. For me, booking a hotel is like shopping. Do I want to go for the hottest trend of the season season or stick with the classics. My rule is make sure you’re getting a deal when trend shopping — but splurge on the classics. For this Miami trip, we stuck with a classic  and we splurged. We sprung for  The Setai, a no brainer if you’re looking for a uber luxe retreat on Collins within walking distance of  faves The Delano and the The Raleigh; paired with understated elegance and over the top accommodations. Let me warn you, it’s pricey, so book it as long as you’re not footing the bill.  If you’re the one putting down the plastic, there are too many deals and steals out there to count right now.

For the style maven looking for unmatched service, I recommend The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach hands down. A stellar location on Lincoln Road, you’ll  feel like a princess from the moment the valet opens the door to your town car (or in our case, a yellow cab, but whatever!) The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach will not disappoint even the most ravishing recessionista with rates starting at $284 per night, including breakfast for two, and a $75 resort credit. Oh, and no visit to The Ritz is complete without a rubdown from the Tanning Butler – ladies, Malcom is a must!!

For the design-conscious diva looking to don her Wayfarers at the newest hotspot, check out Viceroy Miami where you’ll get a 3rd night free when you stay for two. It’s an absolute steal with rates starting as low as $99 per night. Viceroy Santa Monica, their sister property in Santa Monica, is one of our faves — and this newest U.S. outpost from Kor Hotel Group won’t disappoint either.

Other hotel recs for the hip hottie include the W and the Catalina. We’ve visited a lot of W’s and this one was by far the most glamourous we’ve seen. The new knockout offers a resort experience with topnotch dining and spa-ing. Mr. Chow recently opened and Bliss is making an experience in late 2009.

We stumbled upon the Catalina for drinks one evening — a hidden gem in the heart of the action. It’s a no-brainer for a glam girlfriend getaway, offering fun services such as “hook up hours” (i.e free cocktails), transportation to and from the MIA airport and rates starting at $59 per night. Almost sounds too good to be true!
